Geometry is about organizing space. Playing with tessellations is a fun and interesting way to play with organizing space in a particular way. The more opportunities children have to organize and structure two and three-dimensional space, the richer the ideas they'll form.(Younger children would use the physical plastic shapes but this book is more suited to intermediate Phase where they draw and colour the shapes.)
Tessellation is included in many mathematics curricula as one way of developing spatial ideas. If students do not understand tessellation the development of other spatial ideas, such as properties of shapes and symmetry, may be compromised. Half the book focuses on symmetry which forms the base of all regular shapes in Geometry. It teaches a sense of balance and order to a child.
